Beyond the Sidelines: Lessons in Leadership from Coach Jim Tressel
The success of the Ohio State Buckeyes Football Program under the direction of Coach Jim Tressel, has created much discussion about Tressel's leadership style. The qualities that make a good coach and a good football program great have been documented by the OSU Leadership Center through the creation of a unique leadership training package called "Beyond the Sidelines: Lessons in Leadership with Coach Jim Tressel." Featured in this leadership training package include interviews with Coach Tressel, Archie Griffin, Ben Hartsock and others.
Game Plan:
1st Quarter: Honesty, Integrity, & Accountability
During the first quarter, the program focuses on honesty, integrity, and accountability. This foundation helps build momentum in the next three quarters. Focus is placed on determining the role role honesty, integrity and accountability play in a leader's, and an organization's success. To be victorious, you need to know where you stand. Coach Tressel repeatedly operates from a foundation of ethics and values, and has a strong work ethic. Being accountable and keeping commitments is fundamental to any organization or relationship.
2nd Quarter: Teamwork & Building Relationships
The key to any group are the relationships within it, and successful groups have successful relationships. . Every organization needs who know and care about each other. Coach Tressel knows you can't build a team without first building relationships. Tressel believes if you know something about the player who has a locker beside you, then you'll understand what he is trying to do and how he goes about playing the game of football. The second quarter of this video packages focuses on translating this philosophy into success in our organizations.
3rd Quarter: Enhancing Self & Team
In organizations, it is very important to concentrate on learning the strengths of team members. During the third quarter, the video package features accentuating the positive by knowing what each team member does best and focusing on building up these assets. Renowned management author Peter Drucker believes leaders should focus on people's strengths instead of their weaknesses.
4th Quarter: Vision, Tradition & Cultural Change
The final quarter of the video package the focus is on vision, tradition, and cultural change. The Ohio State tradition of excellence is the vision of the football team. When an organization's vision is clear to every member of the team, they can then share it and help make success a reality.
