Demonstrating Concern for Others
Demonstrating Concern for Others
May 3, 1999
"Concern and the trust that derives from it are based on a few essential actions:
*Build one vision, one company.
Develop an identity and esprit de corps in the larger organization that counterbalances individual, team, and unit perspectives.
*Show confidence in people's ability.
Believe that members of the organization have the necessary motivation and ability to deliver on the corporation's business objectives. Provide support to organizational members in relation to their need and consistent with a larger set of values regarding the value of people.
*Establish familiarity and dialogue.
Establish formal and informal processes to ensure that people have sufficient contact with each other and an understanding of each other' perspectives.
*Recognize contributions.
Create organizational approaches to recognize and reward the contributions of people in different groups and roles.
Each of these actions plays a critical role in demonstrating concern (Shaw, 1997, p.85)."
