How to Motivate

1. "Focus on Goals. Goals must always be kept in view - a leader should never let constituents forget what it is they are working for.
2. Match Abilities to Tasks. People work best when they use their skills and talents to the fullest, yet feel confident of their ability to perform their tasks. Leaders must take care to match individual abilities and talents to project tasks.
3. Give Responsibility to Others. Giving an increasing amount of responsibility to constituents, as they are prepared to handle it, is generally an effective motivator. This makes them feel both challenged and trusted.
4. Praise Efforts of Others. Praising constituents on their work can increase their feelings of effectiveness. Praise should also be as specific as possible rather then merely, "you're doing a good job."
5. Give Attention to the Individual. The best leaders can see the "big picture" without losing sight of the value of the individuals who are part of the mosaic. The best leaders know that a single "anonymous" individual, or small group of individuals, can change the course of history. This consideration is reflected in their style.
6. Communicate and Listen Effectively. Ideas need to be communicated to constituents in a clear manner so that they understand the focus of their work. Listening to constituents is also important. Listening to constituents can be a powerful motivator in that increases their sense of personal value.
7. Giver Recognition to Others. Public recognition is important to many individuals. This can be accomplished through the media, recognition at a meeting, or other means.
8. Build on Achievements and All Successes. If the job is well done, the followers will want to do it again, and do it even better. The good followers will succeed to such an extent that they become the next generation of leaders. That is the greatest evidence of motivation (Sieverdes, 1995, p.23)."
