Managing Conflict

Managing Conflict

May 17, 1999

"To manage conflict be willing to alter your approach to dealing with conflict.  To do this, first identify how you are currently handling conflict.  Do you:

*Complain  - or do you suggest reasonable change?
*Shut out others - or do you ask for and give feedback on conflict issues?
*Stand by your guns - or are you willing to consider compromise
*Make presumptions about other people's positions - or do you seek clarification?
*Label people - or do you stick to the issues instead of the personalities?
*Continually cite what happened last week, last month or last year - or do you concentrate on what is happening now?

Recognizing that your own current behavior may worsen the problem puts you in a position to rethink your approach.  Remember - the only person you can change is yourself.  However, by changing your actions, you can create a new climate and ultimately a new reaction (Morrison, 1994, p.151)."
