Creating Followership
Creating Followership
May 22, 2000
"What creates followership? Faith in the leader and his or her vision is essential. People tend to follow those they respect; those they believe will enable them to achieve their own personal goals, those they trust, and those who will meet their needs. People also follow someone who touches their dreams and aspirations, and hopes - appealing to their longing and inner genius.
The practice which flows from the practice of engendering followership is that of getting buy-in to the vision and direction desired. The emotive energy which flows from that is enthusiasm. Thus, the leader who realizes the importance of focusing upon followers is really concerned with getting their buy-in and liberating their enthusiasm, generating a wave of energy and active participation in making things happen (Staub II, 1996, p.74)."
