Check Your Culture's Health

Check Your Culture's Health

January 23, 2001

"Though your corporate culture is ultimately driven by the leaders of your organization, there are many ways in which you put your own stamp on it.  To check the state of your organization's culture and how you're affecting it, ask yourself these questions:

1. Do your employees ask 'Why?' on a regular basis, or do they just do their work the way it's always been done?
2. How is conflict treated - as something to be avoided, or as a potential jumping-off point for creative problem solving?
3. Do you and your workers try to break through artificial barriers in order to gain and share information that will help people do their jobs better, or do you leave organization structures and communication patterns alone because you're accustomed to them?
4. In meetings, do you announce your opinion right away, or do you keep your mouth shut so that other people feel they can share their opinions freely?
5. If someone asked your employees to describe you as a leader, what words do you think they would use (2000, Positive Leadership, p. 1)?"
