Deadline Closing In? 5 Ways to Relieve Stress Fast

Deadline Closing In?  5 Ways to Relieve Stress Fast

April 11, 2001

"The stress of racing against a deadline can result in careless errors that compromise the team's success.  But how can you find the time to take a break and calm down?  Next time the pressure starts to rise, try one of these quick stress relievers:

1. Sip water.  Keep a water bottle at your workstation to sip when you need to take a break.  Concentrate only on the act of sipping and be sure not to gulp.
2. Breathe deeply.  Next time you feel stress, notice how your breathing becomes shallower.  Reverse this by consciously taking a few deep breaths.  Breathing deeply from the diaphragm also helps increase your energy level.
3. Make a list.  At least make one in your head.  Try to recall the names of all your cousins or your grade school teachers.
4. Play music.  Recall a song you haven't heard in a long time and play it 'in your head' or hum it softly with your eyes shut.
5. Know your alphabet.  Pick a letter and think of 10 words in which the letter appears at least twice.  For more success (and relaxation), stay away from the letters such as Q, W, J and Z (1999, Leadership, p.4)."
