Pump Up Passion in the Workplace
Pump Up Passion in the Workplace
February 13, 2001
"Passion. All leaders long for employees with a passion for their work. Though it's internally driven, you can create a work environment where passion can flourish. Here are three vital components.
1. Autonomy. You can't permit complete anarchy, but you can provide your workers with some freedom to determine how they can best achieve your organization's mission and goals.
2. Personal project time. Some of corporate America's biggest successes have sprung from projects workers pursued on their own without the oversight of management - the ubiquitous Post-it Note is a prime example. Creative organizations allow employees to spend a certain percentage of their time pursuing goals they decide upon themselves.
3. Learning opportunities. Of course traditional training can enhance workers' job skills. But a less expensive option is to expose employees to different ideas and experiences within your organization - for instance, by organizing a cross-functional project, participants will learn experientially about the sills required in other departments (2000, Positive Leadership, .3)."
