Top Ten Management Challenges for the Future

Top Ten Management Challenges for the Future

December 5, 2001

1. "Be sure to explain thoroughly the reasoning behind any major decisions or changes your organization makes.
2. Pay attention to ideas and suggestions from your workforce.  Act on them, or at least respond to them promptly.
3. Urge your employees to become more involved in their jobs by enhancing their skills and empowering them to make more decisions.
4. Fight workplace stress.  Help your workhorses deal constructively with the stress in their lives.
5. Create reward programs that connect to your organization's objectives.  Make sure your employees understand what those objectives are, and how they can contribute.
6. Prepare your workforce for change.  Give them as much warning and support as you can when the inevitable changes that affect everyone's workplace strike at yours.
7. Support the establishment of self-directed work teams.  It can take a long time, but in the long run a team that can make decisions and guide itself will be more productive.
8. Communicate your organization's benefits packages and reward programs.  Do it often so employees can take advantage of both.
9. Increase the flexibility of your work arrangements with job sharing, telecommuting, flexible work schedules, and so forth.
10. Promote employees based on their abilities.  Don't hold back talented workers because they haven't 'paid their dues.'  Let them rise to the top as soon as they're ready (2000, Positive Leadership, p.10)."
