"The 'reality' of business is being redefined. Issues such as globalization, deregulation, and rapid technological change are forcing companies to reevaluate the way they operate. Paradigms that have worked for years are no longer effective, and developing strategic leaders is becoming a critical source of sustainable competitive advantage.
To make leadership development strategic, best-practice firms have instituted development programs that:
o Build awareness of external challenges, emerging strategies, organizational needs, and what leading forms do to meet these needs
o Employ anticipatory learning tools to recognize potential external events, envision their future, and focus on actions their organization can take to create its own future
o Tie leadership development programs to solving important, challenging business issues
o Align leadership development with performance assessment, feedback, coaching, and succession planning
o Assess impact of the leadership development process on individual behavioral changes and organizational success (Fulmer & Goldsmith, 2001, pp. 317-318)."
