Building Blocks of Leadership
- Integrity, the foundation of leadership. Leadership must always be anchored in integrity, because honesty is essential for sound decisions, mutual trust, and credibility.
- Emotional stability (maturity). People are stable and consistent in their emotions; behavioral swings are within the normal range of accepted behaviors.
- Relationship oriented. Individuals who are naturally relationship oriented are those we think of as having people skills. They find it easy to take an interest in others and consider their welfare.
- Results oriented. Leaders who know where they are going and are both capable and committed to taking others with them.
- Competence in leadership skills and job knowledge. This final group covers a broad array of competencies that can serve as touch points to remind us of what great leaders know and do (Ellis, 2003, p. 203 -219)."
