Our relationships - the interpersonal connections we may have with a spouse, partner, family, friends, mentors, colleagues and others - deeply pervade our core identity. Our identity is a pale shadow without the people in our lives. According to the Zulu saying, umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu: 'A person is a person because of other people.'
It is through the people in our lives that we find opportunities to serve, learn, grow, share wisdom, find solidarity, and celebrate what we can accomplish together (Gergen & Vanourek, 2008, p. 45).
