Twelve Important Lessons

October 13, 2009

Reference:  Elko, K., & Shook, R.L. (2008).  The pep talk:
a football story about the business of winning.
  Nashville:  Thomas Nelson.

1. Don't defeat yourself before you get started by allowing negative thoughts about past events burden you with limitations.  Rid yourself of self-doubt.  Don't allow yourself to be defeated by preconceptions.
2. Seize the moment.  In a pivotal moment you can choose to say, 'This is my day, I will make the most of it.'
3. Nobody succeeds without the help of others.  It takes a team effort.  Trust others to do their jobs.
4. Stay focused.  Don't focus on the scoreboard' the final score will take care of itself.  In business, don't be preoccupied with how much money you will make. Concentrate on the task at hand - the money will come.
5. Visualize your success.   This will give you a goal that you will eventually attain.
6. Adversity is a part of life.  Don't let setbacks defeat you.
7. Be persistent.  Never, never give in.
8. Expect eh competition to be strong.  Don't underestimate your opponent.
9. Believe in yourself and others will believe in you.
10. Be a team player.
11. Believe and trust the process.   Rid yourself of self-doubts.
12. Believe you will succeed (Elko & Shook, 2008, p. 124-125).
